Have you ever fined by traffic police for not wearing helmet or seat belt?Most of us might have experienced this phenomenon once in our lives. Irony of the situation is that ;for our concern government needs to impose fine on us. Researchers on safety behavior have found that people do not adhere to their PPE(Personal Protective Equipment use due to only one cause.They do not know or aware of “WHY” aspect. Why we should use PPE?
[1.] If you are riding bike on road or street there is a hazard invariably associated with it.You may fall along with your bike,either due to skid, or hit by another vehicle or your own personal medical reason such as sudden bout of unconsciousness. For any reason you fall, our body and your head has got some kinetic energy. When you fall on ground, your head is likely to be smashed against hard ground and the impact is manyfold due to kinetic energy of your head. That impact may kill you on the spot because your skull bones protecting your very delicate brain may be fractured and your brain getting damaged. If you wear helmet that chance of skull fracture gets minimized and risk of brain damage gets reduced. The same applies to the person sitting behind you on the bike.Many people ride bike wearing helmet but carrying bare headed(without helmet) family relative or friend at rear seat.
I have a friend who lost his wife because her wife was sitting on the rear seat without helmet and she fell down from bike and succumbed to head injury.
Here we should stress that helmet is NOT merely for protection from Police Fines, Helmet is for protection of our brain and protection of our life.
[2] Those driving four wheeler cars,bus,taxi etc. has not the same hazard experienced by bikers. In four wheelers your body is moving with speed of your vehicle and in the case of emergency you apply sudden brake or your vehicle gets collided with another firm object like another vehicle,tree,wall or rocks. The vehicle stops but your head and trunk keep moving with the same speed due to inertial of motion ,so your head gets collided with wind screen of your vehicle and you may die due to head injury.To hold your body and protect you, there are seat belts for every passengers in the car.Such belt restrains you in case of sudden forward jerk.The belt is designed such that, you can pull it slowly forward but if you pull that same belt with jerk it would not be pulled.
So,it is your choice ,you just want to escape fine from traffic police by wearing seat belt while driving your car or you want to escape death in case of accident.
WE SHOULD NOT WEAR OUR PPE(PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT) JUST TO ESCAPE FINE.WE SHOULD WEAR PPE TO PROTECT OUR LIFE.
