Protein Synthesis: Detailed Explanation
Protein synthesis is the process by which cells build proteins, following the instructions encoded in DNA. It consists of two main stages:
1. Transcription (DNA → mRNA)
- Occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
- DNA serves as a template to synthesize messenger RNA (mRNA).
- The mRNA strand is complementary to the DNA template strand.
- Pre-mRNA is processed (capping, polyadenylation, splicing) to become mature mRNA.
- Mature mRNA exits the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm.
2. Translation (mRNA → Protein)
- Takes place in the cytoplasm on ribosomes.
- Ribosome reads the mRNA sequence in codons (triplets of nucleotides).
- Each codon codes for a specific amino acid.
- Transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules bring amino acids to the ribosome.
- tRNA has an anticodon complementary to the mRNA codon.
- Amino acids are linked by peptide bonds forming a polypeptide chain.
- The polypeptide folds into a functional protein.
