PICA stands for persistent eating of non \u2013 food or non nutritive substances which is not normal to eat or normally should be avoided . Like eating chalk , clay , paper , mud , sand for Atleast 1 month .<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is more common in children with ID and Autism spectrum disorder . It is more commonly associated with iron deficiency Anemia . It can be treated by behavioural therapy .<\/p>\n\n\n\nTHUMB SUCKING It is a very self soothing behaviour 25 percent of the children have it upto 2 years of age and it ususally subsides. But if it is persisting for more than 5 years of age then it maybe associated with paronychia, paronychia is an infection of the tissue adjacent to the nails . Even here , it can be treated by behavioural therapy .<\/p>\n\n\n\nBRUXISM (teeth grinding ) It is seen in 5 to 30 percent of the children It begins from the first 5 years of life . It is associated with day time anxiety which may happen due to seperation from parents . Persistanf bruxism is associated with temporomandibular joint pain or dislocation . It can be treated by behavioural therapy<\/p>\n\n\n\nBREATH HOLDING SPELLS : Here the child becomes pale and lifeless after crying but regains conciousness on stimulation . It happens due to immaturity of autonomic nervous system . It is most commonly seen in children of 6 to 18 months of age The triggers usually are incessant crying , anger and frustration . Now how do we manage it ?
