ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD )

It is the most common neurological behavioural disorders of childhood
It is estimated to effect 3 to 5 percent of school aged children , it is particularly seen in boys .
60 to 80 percent of the children continue to have it through adolescence.
Now how do we define ADHD ?
If the child is having persistant hyperactivity, in attention and impulsivity which is interfering with day to day functioning development of a child . then that’s called ADHD .
that means the child will not listen or obey any of the given commands, he or she will be extremely active , like talking non stop , fidgets with hands and feet .
He or she will be often forgetful in daily activities which indicates in attentive behaviour , often makes careless mistakes in schoolwork’s or other activities , day dreams , the child becomes easily confused , he or she will have difficulty in processing information as quickly as others.
He or she will blurt out answers to questions which indicates impulsive behaviour , often interrupts conversations or others activities
Now what are the etiology ?
For most children no etilology is identified. But both genetic and environmental factors play a role .
the onset is from less than 12 years of age persistant for Atleast 6 months in Atleast two different settings like school or home or play area without any underlying secondary cause .
What are the risk factors ?
. maternal smoking , alcohol , leaf exposure, mercury exposure
. Due to CNS malformation/ trauma .
. Psychological family stress
Management ?
How do we manage this ?
. We can provide with drugs like amphetamines, methylphenidate and Atomoxetine
And with behavioural therapy .
