Injury & Its Classification

Section 44 Indian Penal Code: An injury is any harm whatever illegally caused to any person in body, mind, reputation and property.

Medical Definition: A wound or injury is break in continuation of any of the tissues of living body.

Mechanical Injury or wounds are injury produced by physical violence.

Trauma: Injury or wound produced in living body by application of external force or violence.

Classification : Injury can be classified under three main categories-

A.Medical

1.Physical or Mechanical

a) Due to blunt force

Abrasions

Contusions

Lacerations

Fractures & dislocations

b) Due to Sharp force

Incised wounds

Chop wounds

Stab wounds

c) Due to Firearms

Firearm wounds

Blast injuries.

2.Thermal

a) Due to cold

Frostbite

Immersion foot

Trench foot

b) Due to heat

Burns

Scalds

3.Chemical

corrosive acid

corrosive alkalis

4.Explosion

caused by explosion of boiler or pressure vessels in industries

5.Miscellaneous

electricity

lightening

X-rays

Radioactive substances
