Discredited forensic scientist Yvonne "Missy" Woods: Colorado lawmakers have waded into the 'scandal' at the beleaguered state crime lab with a bill that they hope will "restore trust" now that Woods - whose preliminary inquiry has been delayed because of "the massive seriousness of the alleged crimes - has been charged with 102 felony counts in connection with years of alleged mishandling of DNA evidence in criminal cases across the state, CBS News (Reporter Shaun Boyd) reports…"Right now, there are defendants serving time who have no idea that the evidence used to convict them was handled by a crime lab employee implicated in misconduct. There are victims who don't know that the forensic evidence in their case may have been compromised," said state Rep. Yara Zokaie, one of the bill sponsors."…"Jud Lohnes with the Colorado Innocence Project says a single DNA result can affect an entire criminal case. "A shaky eyewitness ID becomes credible when supported by DNA. A lead-tight alibi becomes unbelievable when contradicted by DNA," he said."
Carmen Mejia: Texas: Stunning Development: 22 Years Later, Medical Examiner says the baby’s death was actually an accident: - and that new evidence suggests the babysitter, who has already served 20 years of a life sentence is innocent of murder, The Austin Chronicle (Reporter Brant Bingamon) reports, noting that: "On Feb. 13, the medical examiner who autopsied the infant Mejia is accused of murdering testified that if she had known during Mejia’s 2005 trial what she knows today, she would have concluded the infant’s death was an accident, not a homicide. Mejia, a Honduran immigrant who spoke no English, was accused in 2003 of submerging a child she was babysitting in scalding bathwater as she babysat him and her own children. Mejia claimed the scalding was an accident, that one of her young daughters had placed the infant in the tub and turned on the hot water while she was out of the room. She was found guilty, but two years ago retired bailiff Art Guerrero succeeded in getting the New York-based Innocence Project and the Travis County D.A.’s Office to begin reexamining the case, an office spokesperson told us. The two groups are coordinating to try to free Mejia or get her a new trial."
Scott Minton: Tennessee: From our 'Enough too make one weep' department: Even though 18 alibi witnesses and time-stamped receipts from multiple stores put him in a different county at the time of the crime, a jury convicted him and he spent over 30 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. No physical evidence ever connected Mr. Minton to the crime, and the victim’s family has supported Mr. Minton’s efforts for release…"On December 10, 2024, Hamilton County Judge Amanda Dunn vacated Mr. Minton’s conviction after convening an evidentiary hearing where expert testimony was presented evidence on eyewitness identifications and false confessions — two common factors in wrongful convictions. Judge Dunn found that since Mr. Minton’s trial, advances in research in both eyewitness identifications and false confessions constituted new scientific evidence. In addition, law enforcement clung to the victim’s story, which was often inconsistent and changed frequently. The fixation on this single theory — known as tunnel vision — led investigators to hone in on Mr. Minton, despite the overwhelming alibi evidence confirming his whereabouts elsewhere during the time of the crime."
Ruben Gutierrez; Texas: His death row plea for DNA testing is to be considered by the U.S. Supreme Court, Scotusblog (Reporter Amy Rowe) reports, noting that: Ruben Gutierrez was sentenced to death for the 1998 murder of 85-year-old Escolastica Harrison in Brownsville, Texas. "Gutierrez has maintained his innocence and says DNA from several pieces of evidence — such as a hair and nail scrapings from Harrison’s finger and blood stains — would show that he was never in Harrison’s home. And if the DNA evidence shows that he never entered Harrison’s home, he contends, the jury would not have sentenced him to death. But a federal appeals court ruled last year that Gutierrez does not have a legal right to sue, known as standing, to bring federal civil rights claims challenging the constitutionality of the Texas laws governing DNA testing. Now the Supreme Court will weigh in."
Clarence Woodhouse (First Nations) Manitoba, has sued the government over the wrongful conviction he suffered in 1973, for which he was exonerated last year, CBC News (Reporter Caitlyn Gowriluk) reports, noting that he is seeking damages in a case that involved racism, police brutality, false confessions and a prosecutor linked to a number of other wrongful convictions in Manitoba…"Woodhouse was exonerated in the case in October during a brief court appearance where Manitoba Court of King's Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal declared him innocent and apologized for a case he called "infected" by systemic racism, from the investigation to the prosecution to the adjudication. Court heard during that appearance Woodhouse had always maintained his innocence, and that the case against him and the other young men was "almost entirely" based on manufactured police confessions. However, evidence about police practices at the time and Woodhouse's familiarity with the English language "undermines their reliability and veracity," Michele Jules, executive director of the Manitoba Prosecution Service, said at the time."
